Footballer gives Mercedes-Benz to driver
You don’t always associate footballers with generosity so it’s nice when you hear a story that bucks the trend.
Brazilian international Paulinho, best known on these shores due to his failed spell at Tottenham, has been plying his trade over in the fledgling Chinese Super League. In a transfer that bucks the trend of Chinese clubs grabbing stars form the European big leagues, Barcelona have poached the midfielder from his club Guangzhou Evergrande in a €40 million move.
During his time in China, Paulinho gained a reputation for his displays of generosity and for having his feet on the ground, despite his eye-watering salary. The popular player will be missed it seems if the comments of a senior staff member at Guangzhou are to be believed.
“Paulinho never put on any airs. He says hello or thank you to almost everybody and always meets the needs of others.
Perhaps the best example of this was in the aftermath of his move to Barcelona being confirmed, Paulinho donated his prize Mercedes to his personal chauffeur according to squad member, Liang Ke: “He is reluctant to receive any money, instead, he loves giving. For example, he gave his pair of Beats headphones and [Mercedes-Benz] car to his driver.
“His gesture of goodwill is not determined by his high salary. There are tons of people who are richer than Paulinho, but few are as generous and broadminded as him.”
Paulinho’s generous gesture certainly tops the example set by Joleon Lescott during Aston Villa’s recent relegation season, when the defender tweeted a picture of a £121,000 Mercedes after his team had just lost six-nil to Liverpool.
