Mercedes driver drops his car off for service with tracker hidden inside – then finds it’s been driven miles away
He’d only taken his Mercedes A45 AMG into the Bolton dealership for a quick respray, but when the incredulous owner checked his tracker, he found his car parked 16 miles away from where he’d dropped it off, in an outer suburb of Manchester.
The owner, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the dealership had mentioned the car might be taken to Blackpool to perform the work, but was never told it would be taken for a tour round the Manchester area.
He said: “To say I’m appalled is an understatement. The car was due to be taken to Blackpool for the work – so I would have understood if it had gone north. But it was actually driven further south by a considerable distance.
“I don’t want any compensation – but I feel my trust has been abused. I just want people to know that they took my car miles away from the dealership.
“It’s adding mileage and using fuel for a start. Who would want that?”
The management at the Bolton dealership have so far refused to comment, but Mercedes UK have said they are investigating the complaint.
The owner said at first he thought the tracker was malfunctioning, after he had left his car at the garage but after querying the readout with Mercedes’ head office he was told there was no error.
He then drove to the location using his partner’s car, flagged down a police car and reclaimed the Mercedes.
He added: “The tracker showed it was being driven around south Manchester and then back to the Fallowfield address. I ended up driving around for an hour after my car.”
After complaining to the dealership, he was offered a full tank of petrol as compensation, but furious at the breach of trust, the owner is now looking elsewhere to have the work performed.
