Mercedes release X-Class pickup truck
Unveiled at a ceremony in Stockholm, the X-Class is Mercedes first foray into the most competitive, territorial, and lucrative section of the automotive market.
“With the Mercedes-Benz pickup, we will close one of the last gaps in our portfolio,” Dieter Zetsche, Daimler chairman and head of Mercedes-Benz cars, said in a statement. “Our target: We want to offer customers vehicles matching their specific needs. The X-Class will set new standards in a growing segment.”
In the US, the midsize pickup category, in which the X-Class would feature, is growing by in excess of 20% a year. It is also a dominant market in Argentina, Australia, and Brazil.
At the current time, Mercedes has no plans to release the X-Class in the States, when it begins production late 2017. This could be a shrewd move however, as the US pickup market is bossed by the Detroit Three.
Alternatively, Mercedes will offer the X-Class in Europe, Latin America, South America, and Africa. Pricing is as yet undisclosed.
